COLTON MINE WETLANDS

The consultancy report for the mine proposal has mapped 659ha of RE 12.5.4a which is a palustrine wetland system.

This large system has not been mapped by DEHP as HES wetland , which means that the proponents will not be required to provide an offset for the loss of this very large wetland system .

This is despite the fact that the consultancy report was handed to DEHP when the proponents lodged thier EMP.

Only wetlands which DEHP has mapped as HES ( High Ecological Significance) are triggered by the QBOP ( Qld Biodiversity Offsets Policy).

We have alerted DEHP to this unsatisfactory outcome . DEHP are soon to release a mapping layer of GDE (Ground water Dependent Ecosystems ) , a mapping process which is designed to protect palustrine wetlands .
