It is widely acknowledged that the extraction of minerals and gas in Australia provides economic benefits in the form of employment, manufacturing, transport and export. However the economic, environmental and social costs associated with this historic industry are often largely ignored and rarely considered adequately during the assessment of such projects at a State and Federal Level.
Australia faces an ongoing challenge to balance the needs of the economy, the environment and society to ensure true sustainability occurs.
While Mineral and Gas Extraction do play a vital role in our economy, the often irreversible impacts to the environment from these industries mean that the economic benefit will be of little consequence in the long term.
If, as a society, we cannot honestly acknowledge the negative impacts that Mining and Gas Extraction have upon the environment and our social fabric, in conjunction with the benefits that they bring to the economy, then we will not result in the creation of a sustainable future.
